Working with words: decode, encode and use morphemes to teach reading

Working with words is a free downloadable resource for primary teachers by Dr Christine Braid. It covers three practical, classroom-ready frameworks for teaching word-level reading and spelling: decoding using grapheme-phoneme correspondence, encoding for spelling, and using morphemes to both read and spell unfamiliar words

Each framework follows a clear 1-2-3 process with worked examples. From simple CVC words through to multi-morpheme words like reconstruction and disappearing, these strategies are easy to model and apply across year levels.

This resource draws on the science of reading and the way the English code works, giving teachers a clear, research-grounded approach to word-level literacy.

Liked this free resource? Check out the new How to Teach Reading by Dr Helen Wall & Christine Braid. A comprehensive guide to the science of reading for primary teachers, covering decoding, language comprehension and critical thinking. It pairs with the best selling How to Teach Writing, Spelling and Grammar to give you a whole-literacy toolkit grounded in the Simple View of Reading and Simple View of Writing.
